Homebound

Homebound is a personal project exploring the relationship between home and identity through a series of interviews and photographs of Toronto residents. It examines what makes a home and how those who navigate multiple geographies and cultures negotiate belonging and make sense of their identities.

Photographed in each participant’s personal living space, the series employs the camera obscura, or pinhole camera, technique. By blocking out exterior light and allowing a small beam to enter, I projected an inverted image of the outside world onto the interior space. This visual interplay between the external and internal became a metaphor for the relationship between our inner sense of identity and the roles we inhabit within the world around us.

PUBLICATION DESIGN

I paired serif and sans serif typefaces to distinguish my voice as the interviewer from those of the participants. Alternating dark and light pages introduced visual contrast, reflecting the shifting perspectives and intimacy of the conversations.

PHOTOGRAPHY

PROCESS: I used thick 3-mil garbage bags to completely block out window light, then cut a coin-sized hole to let a narrow beam of light enter, creating the pinhole camera effect.

Using long exposures and light techniques, I photographed participants in various poses, preserving an intimate, natural atmosphere. Guided by intuition, I let our conversations shape each composition, directing the light toward details and spaces that invited closer attention and reflection.
